Abstract

This article distinguishes the scientific claim of evolutionary common descent from the philosophical claim of naturalism, surveys the strength of the biological evidence, and presents the major Christian positions - young-earth rejection, old-earth special creation of kinds, and evolutionary creation - along with their respective strengths and unresolved difficulties.

1.Separating three distinct claims

Discussions of evolution frequently conflate three distinct claims: common descent (the historical claim that species share ancestry), the mechanism of natural selection and genetic variation (the scientific explanation for how diversification occurred), and philosophical naturalism (the metaphysical claim that the process was unguided and purposeless). One can accept the first two while rejecting the third, and many serious theistic biologists do exactly this.

Failing to make this distinction produces confused debates where a scientific claim is treated as though it entails an atheistic conclusion, or where theological objections to naturalism are mistakenly treated as objections to the biological evidence itself. Clarity here is a precondition for a productive conversation.

2.The strength of the scientific case

The evidence for common descent draws on multiple independent scientific disciplines that converge on the same conclusion: comparative genomics (shared genetic markers including endogenous retroviral insertions at identical genomic locations across related species), paleontology (a graded fossil sequence including well-documented transitional forms), biogeography (patterns of species distribution matching predicted migration and isolation), and direct observation of evolutionary mechanisms operating in real time in laboratory and field studies.

This convergence across independent methods is what gives the scientific community high confidence in common descent; it is analogous to the way multiple independent dating methods (radiometric, ice core, dendrochronological) converging on old-earth ages gives geologists high confidence in the age of the earth. This does not make the conclusion beyond all possible revision, but it does make it currently the best-supported explanation within the scientific community, including among practicing Christian scientists.

3.The young-earth and old-earth special creation responses

Young-earth creationists typically reject common descent (at least across broader taxonomic categories) and interpret similarities between species as reflecting shared design by a common creator rather than shared ancestry, while proposing accelerated post-flood diversification within created 'kinds.' This position maintains a straightforward reading of Genesis but requires substantial revision of accepted geological and genetic dating methods, a revision not accepted within mainstream science.

Old-earth creationists who reject full common descent (sometimes called progressive creationists, such as Hugh Ross) accept an old universe and earth but hold that God specially created major forms of life, including humans, at distinct points rather than through a single continuous evolutionary process. This avoids some difficulties of young-earth views regarding the age of the universe while still facing the challenge of explaining the genetic and fossil evidence for continuity between species that most biologists take as evidence of common ancestry.

4.Evolutionary creation

Evolutionary creationism (or theistic evolution) holds that God created and sustains the universe and brought about the diversity of life, including humans, through the ordinary providential operation of the evolutionary process he ordained and upholds. Proponents argue this is theologically continuous with the historic Christian doctrine that God works through, not merely despite, natural secondary causes, comparing it to how Christians already accept that God forms each person in the womb (Psalm 139) through the natural biological process of embryological development.

This position aligns most closely with the current scientific consensus, and organizations like BioLogos represent a substantial body of evangelical scholarship developing it in theological depth. It nonetheless requires careful theological work on several fronts, particularly regarding the historicity of Adam and the origin of death and suffering, which its proponents readily acknowledge as ongoing areas of development rather than settled matters.

5.The historicity of Adam

Population genetics indicates that the human genome shows patterns of diversity consistent with descent from a population of several thousand individuals rather than a literal first couple, based on methods like coalescent analysis of genetic variation. This creates a genuine tension with traditional readings of Genesis 2-3 and Romans 5 that assume a single originating pair.

Proposed resolutions include: Adam and Eve as a real pair chosen from within a larger hominin population and given unique covenantal and representative status (proposed in different forms by John Walton and William Lane Craig); Adam as a literary/theological representative figure for humanity rather than a strict biological progenitor (proposed by Peter Enns and others); or rejection of the population genetics inference in favor of strict monogenesis (maintained by some young-earth and old-earth scholars who dispute the genetic modeling assumptions). No proposal has achieved consensus, and this remains one of the most actively debated questions in the origins conversation.

6.Animal suffering and the problem of evil

If death, predation, and extinction long preceded human existence, this sharpens the theological question of why a good God's creation involves such extensive suffering apart from human moral responsibility. This 'evolutionary theodicy' problem is distinct from, and in some ways more difficult than, the traditional problem of evil focused on human suffering and moral choice.

Christopher Southgate and others have proposed that the same evolutionary processes that produce suffering also necessarily produce the diversity, complexity, and eventual emergence of moral and relational creatures capable of love, suggesting a 'package deal' theodicy in which the costs and goods of an evolving creation are inseparably linked. This remains a genuinely contested and unresolved area of theological reflection, not a solved problem.

7.Historical Christian engagement with evolution

Contrary to a popular narrative of immediate, uniform Christian rejection of Darwin, the historical reception was mixed and often surprisingly open. Asa Gray, Darwin's leading American botanical correspondent and defender, was an evangelical Presbyterian who argued evolution was compatible with design. B.B. Warfield, the foremost defender of biblical inerrancy at Princeton Seminary in the late nineteenth century, expressed openness to evolutionary mechanisms as consistent with divine creation.

This historical complexity is important context: rejection of evolution as inherently anti-Christian became more entrenched in American evangelicalism particularly after the 1920s Scopes trial era and the rise of young-earth creationism associated with Henry Morris and John Whitcomb's 'The Genesis Flood' (1961), rather than being the uniform historic Christian position from Darwin's own time.

8.Weighing the positions honestly

Each major position carries real costs. Young-earth creationism requires rejecting or radically reinterpreting a wide, converging body of geological, cosmological, and genetic evidence accepted across independent scientific disciplines, a cost its defenders accept but which is not viewed as tenable within mainstream science. Evolutionary creationism aligns well with the scientific evidence but leaves significant, actively debated theological work regarding Adam and animal suffering.

A Christian can hold any of these positions in good intellectual conscience while representing the difficulties honestly, engaging the strongest versions of opposing views, and resisting the temptation, common on all sides, to treat one's own position as obviously correct and the others as simply the product of bad faith or intellectual failure.
