Fine-tuning of physical constants
Several constants and initial conditions of physics fall within narrow ranges compatible with complex life.
The evidence explained
The observation itself is mainstream physics and not a religious claim: alter the cosmological constant, the strength of the strong nuclear force, or the initial low-entropy condition of the universe by tiny fractions and you get a cosmos with no stable atoms, no long-lived stars, or no structure at all. Physicists of every metaphysical persuasion discuss this, which is why the phrase 'fine-tuning problem' appears in secular literature.
The dispute is entirely about what the observation licenses. The design inference runs: given necessity, chance, and design as candidate explanations, the specificity of the ranges makes design the better explanation. The main rival is a multiverse: if physical reality generates enormous numbers of universes with varying parameters, observers necessarily find themselves in a life-permitting one, and no further explanation is needed.
Two technical objections deserve respect rather than dismissal. First, the probability framing is contested — assigning a probability distribution over possible values of a constant requires assumptions about the space of possibilities that we may not be entitled to. Second, the observation-selection effect is real: we could not have observed a universe incompatible with observers, so the fact that we observe such a universe is not by itself surprising. Defenders answer the second with the firing-squad analogy: surviving a hundred marksmen is unsurprising given that you are alive to notice, and still cries out for explanation.
A learner should be able to state the argument without overclaiming. It is an abductive, cumulative-case consideration — evidence that raises the plausibility of theism relative to a bare naturalism — not a deductive proof. Presenting it as proof is the fastest way to lose a well-informed interlocutor.

Where scholars disagree
Physicists largely accept the underlying observations. Philosophers disagree sharply about probability assignments, anthropic reasoning, and whether the multiverse is explanatorily adequate or an ad hoc rescue.
